Do I need a UK accountant if I live abroad and own a UK company?

Key takeaways for Arab directors

  • 1Every UK company needs annual accounts, a CT600, and a confirmation statement — regardless of where the director lives
  • 2Accounts and CT600 require a qualified accountant — these cannot realistically be self-filed by most directors
  • 3The biggest practical risk for non-resident directors is missing correspondence at an unmanaged UK address
  • 4Fileminder provides ACCA-qualified UK compliance in Arabic, with Gulf working hours (Sun–Thu)
  • 5Full annual compliance starts from £498/year — less than the cost of a single late filing penalty

Fileminder’s take, written for Arab UK company directors

This is one of the most common questions from non-resident directors who registered a UK company while living outside the UK: do I actually need a UK accountant? Can I not just handle it myself? The honest answer is that some of it you can handle yourself, but the parts that require a professional are mandatory, have deadlines, and carry penalties if missed.

What Companies House requires every year: your company must file a confirmation statement (previously called the annual return) confirming that its register details are current. The fee is £50 (raised from £34 on 1 February 2026) and it can be filed online. Many directors do this themselves. However, it requires knowing your filing deadline, logging into Companies House WebFiling, and completing the form accurately. If you miss it, the company moves toward strike-off. If you are unsure of the deadline or unfamiliar with the WebFiling system, a compliance service handles this for under £100 per year.

What HMRC requires every year: your company must file a Corporation Tax return (CT600) within 12 months of the accounting year end, and pay any Corporation Tax due within 9 months and 1 day of the year end. The CT600 is not something most directors can file themselves — it requires statutory accounts prepared to UK accounting standards (FRS 102 or FRS 105), and the CT600 itself is a technical HMRC form. You need an accountant for this. Annual accounts must also be filed at Companies House — both filings have different deadlines and different formats.

What about doing it yourself from abroad? The technical barrier is not impossible — HMRC provides free software for micro-entities, and Companies House has online filing. But the practical issue for non-resident directors is: you do not receive letters at your UK registered office. HMRC sends important correspondence by post. Penalty notices, payment reminders, and UTR letters go to your UK address. If that address is unmanaged, you never see them. Many directors based outside the UK discover they have overdue filings and outstanding penalties only when they try to access their company's bank account or sell the company.

What Fileminder provides specifically: we are based in London, regulated by AAT, staffed by ACCA-qualified accountants, and we work in Arabic. We prepare your statutory accounts, file your CT600, file your confirmation statement, provide your registered office with same-day mail forwarding, and handle your Director ID verification as an ACSP. For Arab directors based anywhere outside the UK, we operate across Gulf working hours (Sunday to Thursday). The complete annual compliance package starts from £498 per year.
