UK business bank account for non-resident directors: HSBC, Lloyds and digital alternatives

Key takeaways for Arab directors

  • 1Wise Business and Revolut Business are the practical options for non-resident Arab directors — fully online, no UK address needed
  • 2Airwallex is best for multi-currency (GBP, USD, AED, EUR) — ideal for import/export or e-commerce businesses
  • 3HSBC and Lloyds do not open UK business accounts for non-resident directors in practice — do not spend time on applications
  • 4A UK registered office address is required before applying to any provider — it must be on Companies House first
  • 5Not having a UK bank account does not affect your Companies House or HMRC filing obligations

Fileminder’s take, written for Arab UK company directors

This is one of the most asked questions we receive from Arab directors: how do I open a UK business bank account for my limited company when I don't live in the UK and don't have a UK address? The short answer: skip the high-street banks. Wise Business or Revolut Business will have you up and running in days. Here is the full picture.

The practical route that actually works: digital business accounts. Wise Business and Revolut Business are the two most widely used options among Arab directors. Both can be opened entirely online from the UAE, Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, or anywhere in the Gulf. Both issue a genuine UK sort code and account number, accept international transfers, support multiple currencies, and connect to accounting software like Xero or QuickBooks. Wise Business is the most commonly recommended starting point — the application is straightforward, transfers between GBP and AED are cheap, and customer support is reliable. Revolut Business is a strong alternative with a polished mobile app. If your business needs a proper multi-currency treasury account (GBP, USD, AED, and EUR all in one place), Airwallex is worth considering — it is particularly well-suited for import/export or e-commerce businesses. None of these are FSCS-protected bank accounts (they hold e-money or payment institution licences, not full banking licences), but for the vast majority of Arab-owned UK companies they are fully adequate.

What about HSBC and Lloyds? The honest answer is: do not waste your time. HSBC UK's business banking operates separately from HSBC UAE or HSBC Saudi Arabia — holding an HSBC Premier account in the Gulf does not give you access to UK business banking. The KYC requirements, your non-resident status, and the absence of a UK residential address mean that almost all applications from non-resident directors are declined, often without explanation. Lloyds, Barclays, and NatWest have no realistic route for non-resident directors without an existing UK banking relationship. We have seen many Arab directors spend weeks on high-street bank applications only to be rejected. Open a Wise Business or Revolut Business account first — you will have a working UK account within a few days.

What you will need regardless of provider: your company registration number, certificate of incorporation, memorandum and articles of association, proof of your identity and address (passport and a utility bill or bank statement), and a description of your business activities. Having a UK registered office address — such as the one included in Fileminder's plans — is a standard requirement and must be showing on Companies House before you apply.

A note on compliance: your UK bank account is separate from your Companies House and HMRC obligations. Having or not having a UK bank account does not affect your filing requirements. However, HMRC requires a UK bank account to process any tax repayments to your company, and UK clients often prefer to pay into a UK sort code and account number.
