ACCA vs CPA vs CMA vs CFA: which accounting qualification should you choose?

Fileminder’s take, written for Arab UK company directors

If you're deciding which accounting or finance qualification to pursue, four names come up again and again: ACCA, CPA, CMA and CFA. They are not really competitors, they are different doors into different careers. Here's how to choose.

ACCA (Association of Chartered Certified Accountants) is the most flexible and globally portable. It covers financial reporting, audit, tax and financial management across 13 exams, and it's recognised everywhere from the UK to the Gulf. If you want a broad accountancy career and aren't tied to one country, ACCA is usually the safest first choice.

CPA (the US Certified Public Accountant) is the premier US licence. Since the 2024 'CPA Evolution', it's three Core exams (audit, financial reporting, tax) plus one Discipline you choose. Pick CPA if your future is US-connected, or you want to work in or with American firms.

CMA (Certified Management Accountant) is narrower and faster, just two exams, focused on management accounting, planning and corporate finance. It's hugely popular in the Gulf among accountants working inside companies (FP&A, costing, strategy) rather than in audit practice.

CFA (Chartered Financial Analyst) isn't an accounting qualification at all, it's the gold standard for investment management and financial analysis. Three demanding levels, heavy on portfolio theory and modeling. Choose it for asset management, equity research or investment roles.

A simple way to decide: broad global accountancy points to ACCA; US accounting, audit or tax points to CPA; finance inside a business points to CMA or CIMA; and investments and markets point to CFA. And you don't have to guess in the dark, every one of these can be studied largely for free.

We've built a free guide to each of these paths, plus AAT, ACA, the EA (US tax), CIA, FRM, ADIT and more, with the exam structure, the skills you'll build, and the best free resources to study each one. Pick your path and start studying for free.

Key takeaways for Arab directors

  • 1ACCA = broad, global accountancy; the most flexible first choice
  • 2CPA = the US licence for audit, tax and reporting (3 Core + 1 Discipline since 2024)
  • 3CMA = a fast, two-exam route for management accounting and corporate finance
  • 4CFA = investments and markets, not accounting
  • 5All four can be studied largely for free, see our per-qualification guides
